I have emphasized the many cognitive benefits of writing by hand on a number of occasions. Writing and thinking are inextricably intertwined. For decades, research has demonstrated the connection between writing and learning.A large body of data supports the view that movement plays a crucial role in letter representation and suggests that handwriting contributes to the visual recognition of letters.”

Studies show that tracing out ABCs, as opposed to typing them, leads to better and longer-lasting recognition supports the development of fine motor skills, phonemic awareness, and reading comprehension.”  Writing skills are quickly becoming recognized as an important school readiness skill associated with later academic success.

Parents and teachers can reinforce these essential skills in several ways:

  • Start Early
  • Practice Regularly
  • Provide Guidance:
  • Use Engaging Resources
  • Integrate Handwriting Across Subjects

So, dust off the “old school” paper and pencil and help children develop literacy early.
